面白い言葉…その21「Beat Around The Bush」

I was talking with someone about how to compliment Japanese people and learned a new word in Japanese. That word is 「察する」. I had heard the word before, but never knew the meaning or had looked it up. I’m always learning!

今回の「今週の英会話レッスン」はいつもの「面白い言葉や好きな表現」に戻ります。その面白い表現は「beat around the bush」。

直訳だと「やぶの回りをたたいて獲物を追い出す」になりますが、実用的定義は「遠回しに探る・言う」、「遠回しな・回りくどい言い方をする」、「要点に触れるのを避け る」。

例文:

① “My boss is a nice guy, but he doesn’t beat around the bush.”
(上司は優しい人ですが、遠回しに言ったりはしません。)

② “Please tell me your honest feelings and don’t beat around the bush.”
(遠回しに言わずに、本心を言ってください。)

I think much of what we have to do and say in Japan requires us to beat around the bush. It can be VERY stressful!

Thanks for reading. See you next week!
